Tim Weed and the Modern Mandolin Quartet

Tim Weed and the Modern Mandolin Quartet join forces to present an evening of unforgettable Crossover Classical music at the Point Reyes Dance Palace. Recipients of multiple prestigious awards and grants, the Modern Mandolin Quartet appears on 20 albums including 15 major label releases. They have been featured at Carnegie Hall, Wolf Trap, and on many prestigious international stages. The've appeared on A Prairie Home Companion, Lonesome Pine Special, and onstage with Edgar Meyer, Ransom Wilson, and Sam Bush. The Quartet was formed in 1985 by Mike Marshall and Dana Rath following the American tradition of the mandolin orchestras and chamber groups from the early twentieth century. Using the instruments of the mandolin family which correspond to the conventional string quartet (two mandolins, mandola, and mandocello), the group performs a variety of music from the great classical composers as well as commissioned original pieces. This concert will present works by Mendelssohn, Villa-Lobos, Dvorak, Copland, Gershwin, Phillip Glass, Fauré and Bill Monroe, performed by Adam Roszkiewiscz on Mandocello, Paul Binkley on Mandola, and Dana Rath and Matt Flinner playing Mandolins.

This time around however, we'll be joined by our master percussionist from Brazil, Porangui Carvalho. Porangui has SO much fire, passion, and joy in his playing and spirit, he inspires and uplifts our music to a whole new level.

I'll also be joined by bandmates Mark Robertson-Tessi (mandolin, vocals), Debbie Daly (vocals, guitar) and Rob Paulus (bass, violin). The evening will start with an interactive performance featuring Porangui at 7:00. The Tim Weed Band will perform at 7:30, and afterward we'll have an informal celebration for my 50th birthday, with impromptu music performances and special guests.

Chef Janos has been hosting a summer concert series every Thursday night at sunset featuring many of Tucson's fine musicians in his J-Bar. Tim will be joined by Rob Paulus on bass, Jeff Friendl on percussion, and Randi Dorman and Debbie Daly on harmony vocals. The band is really looking forward to playing, and enjoying the excellent cuisine, sunset views, and gracious hospitality. Tim will perform at this benefit concert that will also feature local legends Howe Gelb and John Convertino (of Giant Sand and Calexico) and Gila Bend. Rob Paulus will join Tim on bass and violin. Their portion of the show is from 9 to 10 p.m. Gelb and Concertino perform from 10 to 11, and Gila Bend is from 11 to 12 p.m. The benefit is for Mike Hyde, a Tucson guitar player, who is suffering from liver cancer.
