Tim Weed Band comes to town

Tim Weed is bringing his 5-piece band to town for an evening of acoustic music that will be "all over the map."  The Tim Weed Band take audiences through an eclectic mix of classical, bluegrass, jazz, pop, and traditional music, incorporating exotic styles inspired by Weed's travels around the world.

Weed is described as a musical innovator who traverses genres and defies boundaries.  A multi-instrumentalist on banjo, guitar and mandolin, his music is played on National Public Radio, and he has recorded banjo with the Dave Matthews Band and performed for the Dalai Lama.

Weed began his professional career as a teen prodigy on banjo, playing and singing with some of the most influential musicians in bluegrass music.  In his twenties he put the banjo aside, focused on the guitar, and spent 15 years performing, writing, producing, arranging and recording in a wide variety of musical styles with the best musicians and recording studios in Los Angeles.  During this time he also composed music for films.

"When I finally picked up the banjo again after 15 years, I was as surprised as anyone else to find classical music pouring out of it," he says.  For the next few years he focused on playing, composing, and recording his own banjo music.  He has received international acclaim for Milagros, his collection of these banjo works, which is regularly featured on National Public Radio.  All of the compositions are original, and he is now recognized as one of the great innovators on the instrument.

In 2001, Weed received one of the great honors of his career - an invitation to perform a concert of his music for the Dalai Lama during his conference in Arizona.  Weed wrote one of his favorite songs, "Love and Peace and Happiness," just before this event.

He recently switched to the name Weed from his birth name, Wiedenkeller.  He laughs and says, "My friends like to joke about how playing classical banjo music with a name like Wiedenkeller is the perfect recipe for obscurity.  'Tim Weed' sticks with people much more easily."

Concerts with the Tim Weed Band always include improvisation and exciting interplay between the musicians, epitomizing what great live music is all about.  Band members are Mark Robertson-Tessi on mandolin and vocals, Rob Paulus on bass, and Debbie Daly on guitar, rhythms and vocals.
